Keep the requirement and the reading separate
A care source describes a requirement; a device shows a reading at a particular place and time. Record both without treating them as interchangeable. Write which species guidance you are following, when you checked it and whether a vet has given an individual plan. This site intentionally supplies no universal temperature, humidity or lighting setting. Species, life stage, enclosure arrangement and the actual equipment matter, so a value copied from a different animal’s setup can be misleading.
Name every measurement point
Give locations clear names that another keeper can find: for example, the marked probe position or a particular surface identified in your own plan. Include the instrument and the units. A surface temperature and an air reading are different observations; label them rather than combining them into one unexplained number. Record the time and relevant conditions so later comparisons are meaningful. Follow the instrument’s intended use and care instructions, and ask an experienced vet or qualified source if you are unsure what should be measured.
Read the equipment as a system
Before purchasing, match each component to the intended species plan and the actual product specifications. Confirm compatibility, ratings, placement and operating directions with the manufacturers. The RSPCA notes that exotic animals can need carefully controlled heating and lighting. A general product title cannot specify the right control method or position for your setup. Keep manuals, replacement information and the equipment list together; do not assume all bulbs, fixtures, controls or measurement devices are interchangeable.
Record changes with a reason
When a component is replaced or a position changes, make a dated note explaining what changed and which instructions informed it. Recheck the setup using the appropriate methods rather than assuming a similar-looking replacement behaves identically. Do not alter care requirements merely to make an energy estimate smaller or to match a preferred shopping basket. If readings do not match the sourced plan, seek appropriate guidance and address the equipment question; a log is not a treatment. Prepare a clear handover so a sitter knows the normal observation points, which controls should not be changed and whom to contact.
